LA takes top honors at APS Invite

If Los Alamos’ girls track and field team wasn’t getting a lot buzz about being a state title contender this season, it might get some now.

The Hilltoppers trumped the competition at Saturday’s Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational, collecting 111 team points. They topped six other competing schools at the meet, held at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque, including two very good Class AAAAA schools in La Cueva and Cibola.

La Cueva won the girls AAAAA state title three of the past five seasons, most recently in 2007, while Cibola won the team title in 2003.

Perhaps just as unnerving as Los Alamos’ victory — by a margin of 15 points over La Cueva and 28 points over Cibola — is the fact that some of the team’s key components are just now starting to get back from their winter commitments.

Most notably, Taylor Ealey, making it to her first competition since the end of basketball season, won the javelin with a toss of 106 feet even and the shot put with a throw of 32 feet Saturday.

Hilltopper girls coach Paul Anderson said he doesn’t expect his team to be at full strength until spring break — which starts March 30 — or even afterward.

“We still managed to win the meet as a team and we’re happy to see so many athletes contribute,” Anderson said.
