The Los Alamos Atomic Tumblers level 7 team ended its competitive season on a high note Saturday.
The Atomic Tumblers took part in the optional level New Mexico State Gymnastics championships. Precision Gymnastics Academy in Albuquerque hosted the event with 32 level 7 gymnasts, representing nine teams, competed in four age divisions.
Performances at an optional meet are determined by the gymnasts, as opposed to compulsory meets, which showcase preset routines.
The Atomic Tumblers sent three competitors to the level 7 meet and brought home third place honors in the team competition, something that Los Alamos School of Gymnastics’ Loui Janecky said was rather remarkable since teams were placed based on their top three finishes, leaving little margin of error for Los Alamos.
Jessica Allen competed in the 7-11-year-old age division placing sixth overall with an all-around score of 35.25. Allen scored a 9.00 on parallel bars for sixth place, was sixth on balance beam with an 8.40, sixth on floor exercise with an 8.775 and fifth on vault with a 9.075.
Also at the event, Atomic Tumblers Hayley Schake and Annika Bronkhorst competed in the 12-year-old division, each scoring career high all-around scores.
Bronkhorst finished sixth overall with a 36.10 all-around score, earning sixth place on bars with a 9.10, fourth on beam with a 9.05, sixth on vault with a 9.15 and eighth on floor exercise with an 8.80.
Schake placed fourth overall with an all-around score of 36.425. Schake took home first-place honors in two events, becoming the state champion in this age division on floor exercise and vault with scores of 9.40 and 9.325.
Additionally, Schake placed eighth on bars with a 9.00 and seventh on beam with an 8.70.
The LASG 2009-10 competitive season for both compulsory and optional level gymnasts will start in October.
