The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team earned a big win over its toughest district opponent on the road Wednesday.
Hilltopper Colin Kitts belted a solo home run in the top of the sixth to give Los Alamos a 1-run lead heading into the final two at-bats for Española Valley. That home run would end up holding up as the Hilltoppers won 3-2 in Española.
Clinging to a 1-run cushion late in the contest, Los Alamos’ Connor Mang came on in relief of his brother, Jared, to pitch the sixth and seventh innings and earn the save.
With the win, Los Alamos now has the inside track in the race to claim its sixth consecutive District 2-4A title. Both teams went into Wednesday’s game with a district mark of 3-0.
The two teams will still play twice more. They will meet April 26 at Bomber Field, although Los Alamos will likely have the upper hand, needing just a split to earn the tiebreaker over the Sundevils — the Sundevils would need the sweep in those two contests.
Connor Mang, along with earning the save, also had a solo home run in the game.
Jared Mang earned the victory, throwing five innings. He allowed two runs as Española Valley was working his way back from a deficit in the middle innings.
The Hilltoppers (12-6 overall) now have an excellent shot at going undefeated through the first half of 2-4A play. They will face the Capital Jaguars (2-12, 0-3) Saturday in a doubleheader.
The Jaguars are struggling mightily this season and dropped both ends of a doubleheader last weekend to Española Valley by a combined 45-2.
Wednesday’s win was the Hilltoppers’ sixth straight. They’ve outscored their opponents in those six games by a combined 57-11.
