The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team earned a victory in Pool D play Thursday and moved on to today’s quarterfinal round.
The Class AAAA state tournament opened Thursday with pool play. Direct elimination play continued today with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with the state championship match scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.
Los Alamos, the No. 4 seed in the AAAA tournament, got through the pool, which included both fifth-seeded Piedra Vista and 12th-seeded Aztec. The victory in Pool D gave Los Alamos a bid into the state quarterfinals.
All four of the tournament’s top seeds won their pools Thursday morning and avoided a first-round elimination match Thursday night.
A victory for Los Alamos in the quarterfinal round — results from that contest weren’t available as of press time today — would mean a likely showdown between it and the top-seeded St. Pius X Sartans, the team that knocked Los Alamos out of playoff contention in both 2008 and 2009.
The Hilltoppers, who struggled in pool play last year, met the Sartans in the state quarterfinals in 2009, with the Sartans taking a 3-1 victory.
