The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team is still at the head of the pack heading into this week’s action, but this week is a make-or-break one for the squad.
Los Alamos swept the Bernalillo Spartans in a doubleheader Saturday at Bomber Field, taking the first game 9-3 then dropping the Spartans in the second game 10-0.
The two wins put the Hilltoppers firmly in the driver’s seat in District 2-4A, but they face their two toughest opponents in a row. The Hilltoppers host Santa Fe, the only team to have taken a game from them in 2-4A play so far this season, on Wednesday, then travel to Española Valley for a critical doubleheader Saturday.
Against Bernalillo, Los Alamos came up big in its first at-bat both games.
Los Alamos scored three runs in the bottom of the first of game one. To start game two, Los Alamos pushed five runs across to give itself big early cushions.
With the wins, the Hilltoppers improved to a season-best four games above .500 (13-9 overall, 7-1 in 2-4A) and have won six straight contests. They can clinch no worse than a runner-up spot with a win over Santa Fe (7-17, 3-5), which defeated Los Alamos in the first game of their doubleheader April 6.
Meanwhile, Española Valley (15-5, 5-2), which was topped 8-4 by Santa Fe over the weekend, may now be in a position where it must sweep Saturday’s doubleheader to stay alive for a shot at the 2-4A title.
