The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team upped its record to a spotless 4-0 in District 2-4A play with a big win over Capital Saturday night.
Los Alamos played one of its most complete matches of the season to sweep Capital Jaguars 25-15, 25-9, 25-19 at Griffith Gymnasium.
The win put Los Alamos squarely in the driver’s seat with just four district contests remaining on the season. Los Alamos has lost just one set, its first of district play and has now won 12 straight sets against 2-4A opponents.
“We’ve been working on a lot of little things,” said Hilltopper head coach Garry Maskaly. “Tonight, our offense was a bit more diverse. We moved Erin Kirk to the outside against Santa Fe and we’ve been able to play her more on the outside when she’d been playing on the right…that something we’ve been working on this week.”
Kirk and Carli Downs teamed up to put up big double blocks on Capital’s outside hitters. Downs had five block kills in the contest, which threw a monkey wrench into the Jaguars’ offense.
The Hilltoppers (13-3 overall) were dominant throughout the contest even though the Jaguars (6-9 overall, 0-3 in 2-4A) played relatively mistake-free volleyball and served the ball pretty well.
Defensively, Danielle Ortiz came up with four big digs in the first set as Los Alamos jumped out to an 18-9 lead.
Alicia Rendon, who has had an outstanding district season so far, turned in another solid performance Saturday. Rendon finished with a match-high 11 spike kills, four in the first and third sets.
Chase Ealey added 10 spike kills, effectively hitting off of Capital’s attempt to double-block her, angling several of her hits to go out of bounds. Kirk had four spike kills and a tip kill.
“It feels so good,” Kirk said of the Hilltoppers’ dominant performance during the district season so far. “All of us have trust in each other. This is icing on the cake for us.”
Los Alamos has a week off to prepare for its next contest, a big district showdown against Bernalillo at Griffith Gym Saturday night.
