The Los Alamos County Little League All-Star senior softball team bounced back from a loss Saturday to make the championship round of the state tournament.
Unfortunately, the defending state champions proved to be too much for Los Alamos in Sunday’s finale.
Copper, from Bayard, a small community just south of Silver City, needed just five innings to drop Los Alamos for the second time in two days and earn a repeat of its state title.
Los Alamos topped Isleta 12-7 in an elimination game Sunday to get to the championship round before falling to Copper 14-3.
Los Alamos manager Tim Hammock said his team knew what it would be up against trying to unseat Copper, which had the bulk of its 2012 state title-winning team back for this season.
“Copper is a very good hitting and fielding team,” Hammock said. “To compete with them, we had to play at a high level, be aggressively smart and not make any mistakes. Our girls tried hard, but unfortunately we were not able to achieve our goals today. Our defense was a little better than (Saturday’s) effort. We made a few mistakes with the ball and on the bases but mostly from the girls’ excitement and enthusiasm. I cannot fault those emotions, we just need to temper them with a better understanding of situational play.”
