The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team placed toward the bottom of the MaxPreps preseason rankings, which were released earlier this week.
Los Alamos finished at the No. 20 spot in the Class 5A rankings ahead of its season opener, slated for Aug. 29 against Pojoaque Valley. Los Alamos has a preseason scrimmage scheduled for 6 p.m. today against Valencia and Piedra Vista.
Teams are rated based on previous records, number of starters returning and lost, and other factors. Subjective measures, such as other polls, aren’t taken into account in the power rankings.
Los Alamos finished with a rating of -18.6. More than half the 24 teams in Class 5A rated in negative territory and two others, Pierdra Vista and Roswell, were just above zero.
The Goddard Rockets rated the highest in the initial poll. The Rockets finished with a rating of 34.6, more than 8 points better than runner-up in the poll and the 2013 Class 4A champion Farmington — most teams in Class 4A last season moved into Class 5A for the two-year block starting this fall.
While Los Alamos is down toward the bottom of the rankings, it’s not alone among the teams in District 2-5A. Bernalillo is only one slot ahead of Los Alamos, while Capital is one slot below at No. 21.
Española Valley, which only won one game last season and has only won three games in the previous three seasons, is ranked dead last among the 5A teams heading into the opener.
The top-rated team in District 2 is newcomer Del Norte. The Knights (5-5 in 2013) finished in the No. 12 spot.
Most teams in the state will open their regular seasons next week.
