The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to knock off the Albuquerque Academy Chargers Tuesday.
Los Alamos allowed a run in the top of the fifth to go down 3-2, but came up with the rally in the bottom of the inning to earn a 5-3 victory at Bomber Field.
The win was the biggest of the season for the Hilltoppers (4-8) who were in need of a victory over another Class 4A opponent — Los Alamos was 2-5 against 4A teams heading into Tuesday’s game — prior to a key nondistrict doubleheader Saturday against Miyamura.
It was the second victory in a row for Los Alamos, which opens District 2-4A play at Bernalillo next week.
Academy (4-5) started off the season just 1-4 but had won three straight prior to Tuesday. Academy this season has allowed just 39 runs (4.33 per game), an outstanding total for a prep-level team, but has scored an anemic 31 runs (3.44 per game) in 2013.
With only a week to go before the start of the District 2-4A season, Los Alamos has the second-best win total of any 2-4A team — Española Valley is 6-2 — and has played by far the toughest schedule of any of those squads. Santa Fe has won three games while both Bernalillo and Capital are winless.
