The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team won a pair of matches against District 2-4A opponents this weekend in Santa Fe.
Los Alamos’ girls, mixing up their lineups this week, topped both Capital and Bernalillo at the Jaguar Quad. Los Alamos blanked Capital 9-0 Friday and knocked off Bernalillo 6-3 Saturday.
The Hilltoppers, who improve to 4-2 in team competition, are once again the favorites to win the 2-4A championship, something they haven’t failed to do since 2000.
Against Capital, Los Alamos didn’t drop a single set. Capital’s best chance to take sets in that dual came at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles, but Ashley Thurgood held off Helen Marin 7-5 in set one in the singles contest and Thurgood and partner Serena Birnbaum earned a first set 7-5 decision in the opening set in doubles play.
Katya Skurkhin, playing at No. 1 singles, picked up a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Sabina Coto of Capital to set the tone, while Madison Mas blanked Kristen Sisneros in both their sets at No. 5 singles.
Saturday, Los Alamos won four of the six singles contest and two of the three doubles contests to earn the win over Bernalillo’s Spartans.
Laura Whicker played at No. 1 singles and swept Rachel Layden of Bernalillo 6-3, 6-4, while Lauryn Anaya shut out Missy Hopkins in two sets at No. 2 singles.
