In a preseason race Saturday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country team exceeded expectations.
Los Alamos and Albuquerque’s La Cueva ran a scrimmage Saturday in Albuquerque, with the Hilltopper boys’ top five nipping the Bears’ top five in unofficial scoring.
Meanwhile, the powerful Hilltopper girls team swept the top five places against La Cueva to roll to a victory in the preseason contest.
The Hilltopper cross country program will open in earnest Saturday at the University of New Mexico Invitational.
In the scrimmage, the Hilltopper boys finished with an unofficial total of 27 points, while the Bears, the defending Class 5A champions, had a total of 29 points.
In the boys race, a trio of runners from La Cueva pulled away early, but after the first mile, Los Alamos’ top four runners, led by Nick Hill, started to close the gap.
Hill finished second overall, followed by Sean Reardon in fourth place and Alexander Romero in fifth.
The Hilltopper boys had six runners place in the top 10.
On the girls side, Jennifer Mooday earned a victory individually for the Hilltoppers, finishing in a time of 20 minutes, 14 seconds, 21 seconds ahead of runner-up Teresa Sandoval.
Both the boys and girls junior varsity and C teams from Los Alamos also picked up victories in the unofficial results, with the sub-varsity girls teams both picking up clean sweeps over the Bears.
Los Alamos’ results from Saturday’s scrimmage will appear in Tuesday’s Monitor.
