The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team are now within one victory of claiming its fifth straight District 2-4A title after knocking off Bernalillo Saturday.
Despite lingering disappointment following a 2-0 loss to the St. Pius X Sartans Friday afternoon, the Hilltoppers still cruised to a big 6-0 victory Saturday at Bernalillo.
Amy Neal scored all of Los Alamos' first four goals of the contest, three in the first half and the fourth just four minutes into the second half to lead Los Alamos to the win.
The only team that could possibly catch Los Alamos for the district title is Santa Fe. Those two teams meet on Tuesday at Sullivan Field. A win would clinch the title for Los Alamos (12-5 overall, 3-0 in 2-4A).
Los Alamos and Santa Fe played Sept. 25 in the teams' first district meeting. The Hilltoppers prevailed in that contest 4-0.
Saturday, Laura Wendelberger and Kristen Funsten also scored for the Hilltoppers. Jennifer Paul picked up assists on both of those goals. Leslie Guarello had an assist on Neal's fourth and final goal.
Los Alamos, which is a virtual lock to get into the state playoffs even in the unlikely event it stumbled trying to grab the district title, already has plans for postseason preparation.
"We have to be more physical," Hilltopper head coach Jiri Kubicek said. "We were lacking that with St. Pius. We're going to work on some mistakes we made and try to score some more goals."
