The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team will host the 16th annual Louie Cernieck Invitational starting Friday morning.
Los Alamos (0-1) and a solid group of teams will battle it out Friday and Saturday for the tournament’s traveling trophy.
The Cernicek tournament is considered one of the most competitive in Northern New Mexico — so tough, in fact, that the Hilltoppers have won the tournament only once since 2004.
The Hilltoppers will play the defending tournament champs, the Belen Eagles. The Eagles finished second in Class 4A last year but their 2012 season has gotten off to a rough start, losing games to Artesia and Hope Christian by a combined 10-1.
Los Alamos and Belen will face off at 9 a.m. Friday at Sullivan Field. Three of the tournament games, including Friday’s first round contests of Clovis-Goddard and Farmington-Bernalillo, will be played on the new surface at Los Alamos Middle School.
