The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team has its toughest test of the season to date tonight when it takes on its arch-rival. And more than bragging rights are on the line.
The Hilltoppers will meet the Española Valley Sundevils tonight at Edward Medina Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The top spot in District 2-4A is very much on the line tonight, particularly after the Hilltoppers dropped a 3-1 decision Saturday afternoon to Santa Fe.
To keep pace in the early part of the district race, Los Alamos (8-5 overall, 1-1 in 2-4A) will have to find a way to trip up Española Valley (8-5, 2-0). A Los Alamos win tonight would put the Hilltoppers and Sundevils in a first-place tie, while a loss by the Hilltoppers would move them two matches behind the Sundevils, who will have an excellent chance to go undefeated during the first half of district with a match next week against Bernalillo (4-8, 0-1).
Los Alamos will be going into tonight’s match with some momentum, having topped Sandia Prep 3-1 on the road Tuesday night. The two teams played four tight sets, but Los Alamos prevailed 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19.
Hilltopper outside hitter Sierra Foley had a huge night against Sandia Prep (6-7), finishing with 14 spike kills. Los Alamos’ other big hitter on the outside, Brianna Montaño, was nearly as effective, earning 10 spike kills.
Foley also finished the match with 9 ace serves.
Española Valley, which very much likes its chances to make a run in the Class 4A tournament this season, has played a very tough schedule in 2013. It will enter tonight’s contest on a 3-match win streak, which includes big road wins over Santa Fe and, the following night, the Aztec Tigers.
