The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team grabbed a big win at this weekend’s Pecos Panther Invitational.
Los Alamos took home five first-place finishes and three runner-up finishes as it dominated the team standings at Pecos Saturday. Los Alamos earned 223.5 points, more than 95 points better than runner-up St. Michael’s to take the team title.
The Hilltoppers swept the 160-195 pound weight classes, with Cory Geyer, Arnoldo Ortiz, Brian Geyer and Diego Madrid finishing as the individual champions.
“We’re starting to pull it together,” said Los Alamos head coach Bob Geyer. “We looked good. Hopefully, we can keep this momentum going for the last five weeks of the season and clear through state.”
Only one of the 11 wrestlers the Hilltoppers had competing Saturday didn’t finish in the top four in his weight class.
It was the second win in a four-day span for the Hilltoppers, who finished first among the four schools at their home quadrangular Wednesday.
Los Alamos is down to its last three events of the regular season before the District 2-4A championship tournament, scheduled for Feb. 16. Friday, it will take part in the always tough Aztec Invitational in the Four Corners area.
