The Class 4A boys and girls soccer championship tournaments shift to Albuquerque after last weekend’s opening round.
Thursday, the remaining eight teams in each playoff bracket will head to the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex on the extreme west side of Albuquerque to determine the 2011 state champions. Class 4A girls games start at 10:45 a.m. Thursday while boys games will get going at 1 p.m.
The Los Alamos girls soccer team, the No. 2 seed in that tournament, learned it will face seventh-seeded Piedra Vista in the quarterfinal round. Piedra Vista, which finished third in a very tough District 1, took a 1-0 decision over Del Norte, the tournament’s No. 10 seed Saturday in Farmington.
The Hilltopper girls will meet Piedra Vista at 11 a.m.
Los Alamos’ boys, however, had their hopes of a repeat 4A title dashed by the Piedra Vista boys, who won in a shootout.
The boys 4A tournament featured a pair of upsets this weekend, with the tournament’s bottom seed, Atrisco Heritage, knocking off fifth-seeded Chaparral 2-0. Chaparral was the top-seeded team that didn’t earn a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Also this weekend, Santa Teresa’s boys pulled off a minor upset. Santa Teresa, the No. 9 seed, topped No. 8 Artesia 3-0 to advance.
Thursday afternoon in Albuquerque, Santa Teresa will take on top-seeded Belen while Atrisco Heritage will meet fourth-seeded Capital. On the opposite side of the bracket, Albuquerque Academy, a 1-0 winner over Roswell, meets No. 3 seed Farmington, while Piedra Vista meets No. 2 seed St. Pius X.
There was only one minor upset in the first round of the girls 4A playoffs this weekend. In Belen, the ninth-seeded Roswell Coyotes topped eighth-seeded Belen Eagles, 3-1.
No. 5 Miyamura crushed No. 12 Deming Saturday, 7-0, to advance to the quarterfinals. Also Saturday, No. 6 Aztec eliminated No. 11 Valencia by a count of 3-0.
St. Pius X, the top overall girls seed, takes on Roswell Thursday. No. 3 Academy faces Aztec in the quarterfinals, while No. 4 Farmington will meet Miyamura.
