Basketball teams from around the state, including the Los Alamos Hilltoppers, will learn their postseason fates Sunday.
It is Selection Sunday, the day where the New Mexico Activities Association announces the fields for each of New Mexico’s six basketball classifications.
Brackets for the state postseason are due out by 5 p.m. They will be posted online at nmact.org.
For Los Alamos’ girls, they are not so concerned about whether they get in, but whether they will get one of the top 8 seeds in the playoffs. The top 8 teams will host a game in the first round.
In Class 4A, 16 teams are selected to participate. Los Alamos’ girls are comfortably in the top 10 — in the most recent MaxPreps.com rankings, one of the criteria used for selecting postseason teams, Los Alamos was rated eighth in 4A — but with a 17-point loss Thursday night against Española Valley, not to mention usually-soft home attendance numbers at Griffith Gymnasium, a top-8 seed is a coin toss.
What Los Alamos (16-12) does have going for it is a tough district, including teams like Santa Fe and Española Valley which could crack the top 5 overall.
