The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swimming and diving teams won a meet-high 8 events at the Albuquerque Academy Invitational this weekend.
Both Los Alamos teams finished as the runners-up at the meet, which is considered one of the best regular season predictors of success at the state championship meet, which is slated for next month.
Los Alamos’ girls ended up with 759 points, while Los Alamos’ boys collected 679 points. Host school Academy won both ends of the meet comfortably, while Las Cruces finished third in both team competitions.
Hilltopper head coach Stu Corliss said it was a huge showing by his group, who not only earned 12 new state qualification marks, but improved on seven other individual marks and four relay events.
The top swim of the day belonged to sophomore Sarah Lott, who broke the Los Alamos program record in the 100-yard butterfly with her event-winning time of 59.27. The old record of 59.96, which was held by former Hilltopper Amy Henninger, had stood since 1986.
Among the other Hilltoppers’ event wins were the 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay on the girls side and the 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke on the boys side.
