The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team is in the middle of the pack but the Hilltopper boys are on the tail end of this week’s power rankings.
Los Alamos’ girls (5-6), who have won four of their last five contests heading into Thursday’s game at West Las Vegas, finished in the No. 14 position in the most recent MaxPreps rankings. Los Alamos is third in the rankings among teams in District 2.
Meanwhile, the Hilltopper boys (1-10) were ranked as the No. 26 team in Class 4A, dead last among boys basketball teams.
Los Alamos went 0-3 at last weekend’s Poe Corn Invitational and then dropped Monday’s contest to Class 4A Kirtland Central. Prior to those four losses, the Hilltoppers had picked up their first win of the season, that coming at the expense of Bernalillo Dec. 14.
On top of the 4A girls rankings this week was St. Pius X (6-1), which has quietly put together a solid season. Los Alamos’ district foe, Santa Fe (9-1), finished second overall, followed by Valencia, Roswell, Gallup and Española Valley.
The Roswell Coyotes, were on top of the boys 4A ratings. The Coyotes are the lone undefeated team in the classification.
All three of the District 4 teams were in the top four in the current poll. The lone interloper at the top of the poll was second-ranked Los Lunas.
Española Valley (8-4) was ranked 11th, the highest mark of any District 2 team.
