Monday, the first official practice of the Los Alamos Hilltopper football program will get going in preparation for its first game at the end of the month.
Los Alamos High School’s fall sports programs officially get in full swing this month, although non-mandatory pre-preseason workout sessions have been going for most of the summer in preparation for the fall.
While the Hilltopper football team is the first to get its preseason officially underway, it will be the next-to-last sport to have its first contest of the fall season. Los Alamos’ varsity will host Pojoaque Aug. 31.
Expectations are high around Los Alamos’ fall sports programs this year. Los Alamos qualified for the postseason in each of its six varsity fall sports — football, girls soccer, boys soccer, girls cross country, boys cross country and volleyball — for the first time since 2008. In those sports, the Hilltoppers swept all six District 2-4A titles and picked up two state championships, in boys and girls cross country.
Los Alamos also competes in fall boys and girls golf, but that season extends into the spring with the district and state tournaments scheduled in late April and early May.
While football officially gets going Monday, the first official day for all other fall sports is Aug. 13.
