After a first round victory Thursday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team dropped its final two games of the Piedra Vista Invitational this weekend.
Los Alamos opened up the tournament on a high note, knocking off Fruita (Colo.) Monument, 2-1, its fourth win in a row. Unfortunately, Los Alamos couldn’t follow up, dropping an 8-6 decision to Piedra Vista and a 2-1 decision against Durango, Colo., in the third-place game.
The two losses placed the Hilltoppers fourth in the tournament.
The Hilltoppers’ win over Monument Thursday was their fourth straight 1-run victory and gave them a chance to score their first victory of the year over Piedra Vista, which swept them in a doubleheader to start the season.
However, Piedra Vista (9-3) would take its third straight decision over Los Alamos this season and would go on to beat Farmington 4-1 in the tournament championship Saturday.
In its contest against Durango’s Demons, Los Alamos limited the Demons to just five hits in the ballgame. However, Los Alamos (6-6) only came up with three hits of its own.
Los Alamos’ only run came in the sixth inning, which tied the score at 1-1, but Durango (4-2) answered in the bottom half of the inning and was able to shut Los Alamos out in its final at-bat.
The Hilltoppers will next take on another team that took part in this weekend’s tournament, Miyamura. The Patriots are only 1-6 on the year but, like the Hilltoppers, have played a very tough schedule and were in the playoffs each of the last two seasons.
