The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team won going away Saturday against the Capital Jaguars, but it wasn’t all a celebration.
While heading in for the first score of the game just a little over three minutes in, Los Alamos’ Catie McDonald ran headlong into the Jaguars’ left goalpost. McDonald was down on the ground right by the goalpost for several minutes until she was taken by ambulance to Los Alamos Medical Center.
McDonald, who is having a marvelous season for the Hilltoppers, was groggy following the collision and had to be taken by gurney off the field to the waiting ambulance.
Initial reports suggested McDonald may have suffered a whiplash-like hit to her head and neck.
Despite the early injury, which left many Hilltopper players and spectators shaken, the team regrouped to rout the Jaguars 10-0.
McDonald’s sister, Meghan, tallied the 10th and final goal in the 62nd minute on a penalty kick.
Los Alamos scored six goals in the first half, with Amy Neal picking up a hat trick 24 minutes into the game.
With the victory, the Hilltoppers (12-2) improved to 3-0 in 2-4A play and have outscored their three district opponents 26-0 in those games.
