The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team has a pair of games this weekend, including a home game tonight against a struggling opponent.
Los Alamos will face off against the Cibola Cougars at 8:15 p.m. at the county ice rink.
The Cougars are the bottom team in the current New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League standings, having won just two of their 15 games on the 2013-14 season.
Also this weekend, the Hilltoppers will travel to Taos to take on the Ice Tigers, their chief rival. That game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday and will be broadcast on KRSN.
Los Alamos snapped a three-game losing streak last weekend, topping the Santa Fe Blue Jackets 3-1 in Santa Fe. The win by Los Alamos (6-5) also avenged an early season loss to the Blue Jackets (2-9-2) at the county ice rink.
Currently, Los Alamos is sitting in fourth place in the NMIIHL standings. The two teams in the league from El Paso, Texas, are 1-2, with the La Cueva Bears sitting in third place.
League leader Coronado is undefeated on the season at 11-0-1, while El Paso Franklin is 10-2, with one of those losses coming at the hands of the Hilltoppers earlier this month.
For Taos (6-6), it’s going to be a busy weekend. The Ice Tigers play La Cueva tonight, Los Alamos Saturday and St. Pius X Sunday.
Individually for the Hilltoppers, Isaac Dunwoody is still among the top-rated goaltenders in the league with a 2.25 goals-against average and had made 116 stops between the pipes. Teammate Zealand Walterscheid has a 2.98 goals-against average.
