The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys tennis team split its final two regular season duals at home Monday and Tuesday.
Los Alamos doubled up against Santa Fe Monday, taking a 6-3 win, then dropped a tight 5-4 decision to St. Michael’s Horsemen, 5-4.
The victory over the Demons Monday clinched the Hilltoppers’ overall No. 1 seed heading into this weekend’s 2-4A tournament. The winner of that tournament in the team, singles and doubles qualifies to move on to next week’s state Class 4A championship tournament.
Against St. Mike’s, the Hilltoppers went 2-4 in singles competition. They needed to sweep the doubles contests but came up one match short in doubles to snatch the victory against the Horsemen, a tough Class A-3A squad.
Los Alamos had a big showing against Santa Fe one day earlier, going 4-2 in singles play and taking two of three in doubles.
Individually, Hilltopper No. 1 Stephen Townsley won both his matches, including defeating Santa Fe’s Warren Fulgenzi, who retired due to injury.
Townsley and doubles partner Dalton Smith also won both contests at the No. 1 spot. Townsley/Smith had to come back from a set down against Fulgenzi/Rafael Garcia to win that match 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
