LA boys team wins at Santa Fe meet

-A A +A

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys track and field team picked up its first win of the season, and did so in impressive fashion Saturday.
Los Alamos took part in the Capital City Invitational, hosted by the Santa Fe Demons. At that meet, Los Alamos picked up 120 team points, easily outdistancing St. Michael’s and the other comers to earn the victory.
Along the way Saturday, the Hilltopper scored five event wins, including a big victory by Greg Ahlers in the high jump. Ahlers nipped teammate Skyler McCall for the win, with both of them clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.
Ahlers, McCall and Simon Bailey, who finished third, all also punched their ticket to the state tournament with their performances. Bailey leapt 6 feet to earn his way to the state meet.
Hilltopper head coach Larry Baca said it may have been the first time in his long career at Los Alamos he had three athletes qualify for state in the same event on the same day.
With their performances, Ahlers and McCall are among the top seven qualifiers in Class 4A for high jump. Ahlers was also the winner in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing one spot ahead of teammate Tyler Mullen.
For Bailey, he was also the big winner in the 200 meters, and his time in that event (21.34) marked the best time posted in 4A this season. Bailey is the only runner in the classification to have a sub-22 second time.
Furthermore, Bailey, along with teammates Xavier Dennison, Miroslav Betts and Colin Hemez won the 1600 medley relay.
In pole vault competition, Seth Drop was also a winner. Drop matched his career-best mark of 12 feet, 6 inches to win.
Los Alamos, which is known for being able to peak well toward the end of the season, maybe showing signs of doing just that with Saturday’s performance.
The Hilltoppers have just two regular season meets remaining, the two-day Richard Harper Memorial, which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, followed by their home invitational May 2.
