Swimming and diving: ’Toppers win 16 swim events in first home appearance

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swimming teams picked up impressive victories at their home opener of the 2011-12 season Saturday.
The Hilltopper boys grabbed a total of 605 points, more than double the total of their next-near competitor, Los Lunas. Los Alamos’ boys won eight events on the day.
For Los Alamos’ girls, they picked up 484 points to win. Los Lunas was also second in the girls competition with 369 points.
On the girls side, Los Alamos also took top honors in eight races, while the team’s top diver, Amy Neal, picked up a win in Friday’s diving contest.
This weekend’s competition, held at Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center, was Los Alamos’ second meet of the season. Both teams finished in third place at the Barney Relays Nov. 19.
Los Alamos’ girls took each of the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Sydney Schoonover won the race going away, finishing in 27.28 seconds, 1-1/2 seconds better than runner-up Celeste Levy — in the 50 freestyle, a win by more than a few tenths of a second is considered a runaway. Schoonover was also the winner in the 100 freestyle.
The Hilltopper girls picked up three new state championship qualification marks Saturday. The 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams, both consisting of Maria Venneri, Molly Finn, Ashlynn Bennett and Schoonover earned trips to state, as did Justine Yang with her 500 freestyle finish of 5:51.03.
For the Hilltopper boys, Trey Pereyra’s time of 5:22.48 in the 500 freestyle also qualified him for the state title race, which will be in February.
Other big finishes for the boys Saturday included Dalton Smith, who won both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Richard Jia, who won the 100 freestyle and finished second in the 100 breaststroke.
