The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team appears to have something to prove to the rest of Class 4A this season.
The Hilltoppers, who open their season Aug. 27 at Pojoaque, didn’t garner a single vote in the first New Mexico High School Coaches Association poll of the year. The polls were released Wednesday.
Los Alamos, which is coming off a 4-6 season, went 3-1 in District 2-4A, finishing second in that race but failed to make the state playoffs. However, some unanswered questions about the team, most notably how it will fill the quarterback spot after the departure of Kory Balog, remain heading into the 2011 season.
Although Los Alamos didn’t receive much love from the statewide voters — nine coaches took part in the preseason 4A poll — it can take some solace in the fact the rest of District 2 didn’t fare much better. All told, the district earned a grand total of three points, two for defending champ Bernalillo and one for Santa Fe, which finished third in last year’s district standings.
Goddard picked up six first-place votes and 87 total points to earn the state preseason No. 1 ranking. The Rockets finished nine points ahead of defending state champion Artesia 12 points ahead of Aztec, which was the runner-up in Class 4A last year.
