The Los Alamos Hilltopper cross country team will be back in action this weekend after a week off from competition.
Los Alamos’ boys and girls will both take part in the Rio Rancho Jamboree Saturday.
The Rio Rancho meet is the third of three straight big races for the Hilltoppers, who are just a week away from hosting their season finale at Los Alamos Golf Course.
Most of the top teams in the state, including St. Pius X, Eldorado, Piedra and district foes Española Valley and Santa Fe, are scheduled to take part in Saturday’s race, which is run on the same course that will host the state championship meet Nov. 9.
One of the notable no-shows at Rio Rancho this weekend will be Albuquerque Academy, Los Alamos’ main rival, which elected to compete in the Sandia Invitational this weekend.
This is the finish of a critical stretch for the Hilltoppers, who took part in the Academy Invitational in late September before traveling to the Desert Twilight Festival in Mesa, Ariz., Oct. 4.
Los Alamos’ teams had good showings at those two meets. Los Alamos’ girls finished second at Academy, behind Class 5A Eldorado and ahead of Academy’s Chargers, their main competition for a state team championship.
In Arizona, the Hilltopper girls finished fourth running against some top teams from around the region.
Los Alamos’ boys placed fifth at Academy and eighth at the Desert Twilight meet. Individually, Colin Hemez finished in the top 10 in Arizona, a week after finishing third against Academy.
