Several current and former Los Alamos High School athletes will take part in a big, region-wide track and field meet in Albuquerque this weekend.
A pair of boys and three girls from Los Alamos are scheduled to attend the Great Southwest Track and Field Classic. The invitational meet will run from Thursday through Saturday at the University of New Mexico Track and Field Complex in Albuquerque.
As its name implies, GSW involves some of the top prep-level athlete from around the region. Representatives from California, Colorado, Kansas, Washington and Arizona, among other states, will be in attendance.
This will be the 39th year of the GSW. All of the meets in recent history have been in Albuquerque.
Among those set to compete from Los Alamos include Simon Bailey and Greg Ahlers. Both athletes were multi-discipline competitors for the Hilltoppers last year and both will take part in the decathlon this weekend.
The decathlon is a 10-sport competition which includes several different events, such as high jump, sprints, throws and distance events.
The competition is usually tough at GSW, particularly in the decathlons. In 2009, former Albuquerque Academy star Curtis Beach set the record in prep-level competition at the GSW with his score of 7,719, but that record only lasted two years before it was demolished by Gunnar Nixon of Edmund, Okla., with his score of 8,035.
Both Ahlers and Bailey advanced to the state meet for Los Alamos this season, with both competing against each other in Class 4A high jump competition.
On the girls side, Hilltopper 2014 captain Hayley Schake will take part in the 400 meters — she was one of the top-rated 400 runners in the state for much of last season — and will likely be invited to compete in a relay for the New Mexico team.
Elizabeth Lockhart, who was a surprise runner-up in 4A triple jump competition will compete in that event at the GSW, while Chelsea Challacombe will take part in the heptathlon and the high jump competition.
