Baseball: All-Star team advances to state tourney

The Los Alamos 9/10 All-Star baseball team rolled to a big victory in the District 1 tournament last week, capped off by a 20-0 pounding of Española.
Los Alamos thumped four straight opponents to take the district title.
In the tournament, which concluded Wednesday, Los Alamos wore out home plate, scoring 81 runs in four games and had two shutout victories over Española’s All-Stars.
With the district title, Los Alamos now advances to the state tournament, which starts Friday in Portales.
Los Alamos started with a lopsided 24-2 win over Santa Fe American in the first round, then followed that up with a 24-0 victory over Española — Española would eventually come back up through the loser’s bracket to get to the final. In the semifinal, Los Alamos upended cross-county rival White Rock 13-4, the only game in its tournament not decided by at least 20 runs.
In the finale, pitcher Arthur Steinkamp threw a 4-inning no-hitter, striking out 11 Española hitters to help secure the district crown.
Along with Steinkamp, the Los Alamos roster included Colton Battle, Jacob Benelli, Logan Bishop, Jakob Castille, Walker Eaton, Korey Eifert, Ryan Garcia, Alicia Gonzales, Antonio Gonzales, Aidan Semelsberger and Tyler Weiss. The team was coached by Alex Garcia, Lance Eaton, Brad King and Dan Castille.
