The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club presented Elizabeth Hjelvik with a scholarship award in memory of longtime Kiwanian Steve Stoddard this past Tuesday. Hjelvik will be attending the University of New Mexico and will study biochemistry with a minor in Neuroscience and French. Pictured from left to right were: Don Casperson, Adult Key Club Mentor; Karen Kendall, Kiwanis President; Elizabeth Hjelvik, Karl Hjelvik, dad; Lisa Pansoy-Hjelvik, mom; and Christian Hjelvik, brother. Hjelvik was selected because of her strong participation in Key Club. She joined Key Club her sophomore year and in her junior and senior year was elected as Lieutenant Governor for the Sangre de Cristo Kiwanis. In addition, Hjelvik co-chaired the Suicide Prevention Week, served as a volunteer for Family Strengths Network for many years, and organized the ‘can tab’ drive for the House of Ronald McDonald for young cancer patients. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. Kiwanis was founded in 1948 and is the oldest service organization in Los Alamos and focuses on youth projects.
