The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos is inviting the community to the second annual Kentucky Derby Party from 3 to 5:30 p.m. May 3 at the Pajarito Brewpub & Grill.
Tickets for the event is $50, half of which is for the event and half of which is a donation to purchase immunizations for 13 women and all of their children through Project Eliminate, a joint Kiwanis International and UNICEF project to wipe out Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus worldwide.
MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.
However, MNT is highly preventable. Just three doses of a $.60 immunization protect mothers, who then pass on the immunity to their future babies.
Last year, more than $1,200 was raised for Project Eliminate through the Kiwanis Club’s Kentucky Derby party.
This year marks the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby.
The ticket price includes a mint julep, cocktail or beer and abundant hors d’oeuvres, a Derby hat contest, big screen TVs, 50-50 betting on the big race and a raffle for a framed Kimber Wallwork-Heineman original print. The special menu includes fried chicken, pork served in barbecue sauce, strawberry and spinach salad, bourbon wieners and more.
