It took a bit of time for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team to overcome an initial jolt served up by a markedly improved Bernalillo Spartans team, but Los Alamos bounced back to pick up the win Friday night.
Los Alamos, which trounced Bernalillo in a Jan. 22 meeting on the road, quickly fell behind Friday against the Spartans, who started the contest dropping in 7 points before the Hilltoppers got on the board.
Before the end of the first quarter, however, Los Alamos recovered. It would tie the score by the end of the quarter and would eventually pull away in the second half.
Los Alamos won the contest 57-37 to get the second half of the District 2-4A season started on the right foot.
Following Los Alamos’ 58-24 win at Bernalillo last month, the Spartans underwent a coaching change and have been playing better since that time.
Friday night was Senior Night for the Hilltoppers and leading the comeback effort was senior Erin Kirk.
Kirk had one of the most productive outings of her career, dropping in 21 points, far and away the best total of the night, and threw in 11 rebounds as well. Kirk hit 5 of 6 shots from the floor in the first half, accounting for 15 of Los Alamos’ 25 points at the break.
