A pair of top-shelf Los Alamos High School athletes will be making their final appearances of their prep careers this week.
Former Los Alamos athletes Alex Kirk and Taylor Ealey will be taking part in North-South All-Star contests.
The North-South All-Star contests are sponsored by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. The NMHSCA hosts the North-South series annually, which pit the top graduating players in the state in various prep sports.
The final two contests of the summer, for volleyball and boys basketball, will be both be played in Albuquerque this week.
Ealey, who will be participating in her second All-Star contest of the summer, is on the North’s volleyball squad.
The Class 3A-4A contest will be played Tuesday night at the Johnson Center on the University of New Mexico campus. The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Ealey, one of Los Alamos’ primary offensive weapons for each of the last three seasons, was the only player from District 2AAAA selected to participate in the All-Star match. She will, however, join a pair of players from next-door-neighbor Pojoaque, Miquela Lovato and Dionna Montoya.
In 2010, Ealey was named the district’s Most Valuable Player and helped the team to a second straight 2AAAA title, going 9-0 on the season and winning both the regular season and district tournament titles.
Last month, Ealey also took part in the North-South girls basketball game. In that game, played at Highland High School in Albuquerque, she finished with 14 points, the second-highest total on the North team, to go along with 5 rebounds.
Thursday, the North-South boys basketball team will be played at Valley High School starting at 8 p.m.
Former Los Alamos superstar Kirk is scheduled to appear in Thursday’s game. Kirk, the 6-foot-11 center, will be the big draw.
Kirk, who was the most coveted player to ever play at LAHS, signed in October to play hoops for the UNM Lobos. Kirk started school at UNM this summer and has been working out with the team since early last month.
In 2010, Kirk led Class AAAA with 25.2 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. He helped the Hilltoppers to the district runner-up spot behind district powerhouse Española Valley, which finished as the Class AAAA runner-up last season behind Roswell.
Los Alamos advanced to the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs every year of Kirk’s career, but each year his and the team’s season ended there.
Kirk will team up with two Española Valley players he butted heads with throughout his prep career, center Gabriel Rodriguez and forward Luis Alvarado. Both players were also invited to participate in this year’s All-Star contest.
