Amanda Mercer led the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls junior varsity team to a big win over the rest of the cross country field at Saturday’s University of New Mexico Invitational.
The UNM race was held at the school’s North Golf Course.
The Hilltopper girls JV finished with 22 points, one-quarter that of the Eldorado, the competition’s runner-up. The Hilltoppers placed four runners in the top five and all five scorers in the top nine to win the race going away.
Mercer finished the course in 20:34 to hold off Rebecca Castillo of Volcano Vista by 5.8 seconds.
The race was the season opener for both Los Alamos’ boys and girls JV teams.
In the boys JV race, Los Alamos finished second in a three-way battle with Albuquerque Academy and Cleveland.
Academy won the team competition with a score of 64, while Los Alamos finished with 74 points and Cleveland had 82.
Mike Walker had the top finish for the Hilltopper boys JV, finishing seventh, right ahead of teammate Colin Hemez.
Also in that race, the top finisher was Robert Abeyta of Pojoaque. Abeyta won the race by more than 18 seconds over runner-up Joseph Apodaca of Volcano Vista.
Noah Simpson finished second overall in the combined boys and girls C team race, leading a pack of four Hilltoppers in the top 10.
