Juno: a breath of fresh air

My score: 4/5 kernelsHaving just watched the Academy Awards, it is easy to look back and realize what an extraordinary gamut of movies there have been over the last year. This last weekend, I decided to see a movie that was up for Academy Awards in the Best Actress, Directing, Original Screenplay and Best Picture categories.The movie is about a 16-year-old girl named Juno, played by Ellen Page, who gets pregnant unexpectedly during her high school years after a one-time encounter with her best friend. The movie takes on a very personal point of view, following Juno through the nine months of pregnancy as she continues to go to high school, and has to make many important decisions that will affect the rest of her life.This film has an interesting take on teen pregnancy. In all honesty, it could have easily been very dark and heavy by dealing with such controversial subject matter. “Juno,” however, deals with this pregnancy in perhaps the most powerful and unexpected way possible — by using sharp wit and a satirical take on life to handle the emotional situation. Much like the style of the television series, “The Gilmore Girls,” Juno’s fast-speak dialogue and matter-of-fact sense of humor endear her to the audience and create a fresh spin on the subject matter throughout the entire story.
