The Los Alamos Area Home Educators’ Speech and Debate team, “Jemez Mountain Home School” Team, brought home a First Place trophy from the New Mexico State Tournament in Hobbs, last weekend.
The local team earned “First Place Limited Entry Sweepstakes.”
“Every team member’s efforts contribute to earning a sweepstakes trophy,” said the team’s coach, Dr. Carolyn Conner.
Team participants for the state competition included:
Harry Green, Ilusha Bronisz, Conner Schultz, Matthew Davenport, Emma Schmidt, Rose Sartor and Andre Green.
In addition, every member of the JMHS State Congress Squad actively debated legislation on the floor.
“I would call our Congress efforts a smashing success,” Conner said. “Plus, every single member placed in at least one or more rounds in every event and many individual round first places.”
Green took home the State Plaque for Third Place Overall Original Oratory among 31 competitors, and Schultz earned his Third National Forensic League Degree, the Degree of Excellence.
The team will compete in the New Mexico NFL District Competition on March 19.
