May 25, 1940 - June 18, 2008 – Janis Siemon died peacefully at home on June 18, 2008 after a two-year battle with melanoma. In recent weeks, while under hospice care at home, she was comforted by visits from all her family including her nine grandchildren.

Janis was born in Nyssa, Ore., to James W. and Victoria S. Bushong. She graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in Grosse Pointe, Mich., in 1958, and then the University of Michigan in 1961. She married Richard E. Siemon March 31, 1961, and eventually had four children. After her husband attended graduate school in La Jolla, Calif., they lived for 35 years in Los Alamos, N.M., where she raised her family and then pursued a professional life as a social worker. In 1978, she obtained a Master of Science in social work at the University of Wisconsin. She conducted a private practice in family therapy for more than 20 years. After the Cerro Grande Fire in May 2000, Janis was selected by the Interfaith Council to operate an office assisting families who lost homes in the fire. She was active in the P.E.O. organization, serving numerous times as chapter president, and state president of New Mexico in 1988. She was an active member of the United Church of Los Alamos and the First United Methodist Church of Reno. She was trained as a Stephen Minister, and helped run that program for many years in Los Alamos. In Reno, she was a volunteer at the Reno Assistance League. Her interests included playing golf, watching Tiger Woods on television, Mah Jong, bridge, crafts, reading and spending time with grandchildren. She had a wonderful knack for reaching out to people, usually convincing them they were her best friend, which they were.

Janis was preceded in death by daughter, Laura Siemon, in May of 1990, and mother, Vicky Bushong, in March of 1998. She is survived by her husband, Richard Siemon of Reno, Nev., and their dog, Lucky; three children: daughter Vicky Mayfield and husband Matt of Lafayette, Colo., daughter Mary Beth Wolff of Bishop, Ga.; and son Ron Siemon and wife Tracy of Albuquerque, N.M.; nine grandchildren: Taylor and wife Melissa, Kaitlin, Kelsey, Terrance, Kyle, Stacy, Travis, Amber and Kayla; her father James W. Bushong, of Medford, Ore; and her three sisters: Joyce Ellis of Medford, Ore.; Elizabeth Armstrong of Marietta, Ga., and Kathy Patterson of Flaxton, QLD, Australia.

Service will be held at the United Church of Los Alamos at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, Kathleen Logan officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society (http://media.legacy.com/accipiter/adclick/CID=0000010c6bbab84d00000000/a...) or the P.E.O. Sisterhood would be appreciated.
