How can we fail to respond?

Dear Editor,

I want to express my deep sadness - even dismay - at the rather dismal response to our community's United Way campaign. The 6-percent Los Alamos National Laboratory employee participation rate (as of Friday) is simply shocking.

We are one of the most affluent communities in the nation, but we are surrounded by significant human need - even inside our own town. How can we be so blind or self-absorbed that we fail to respond? Of course, there are many reasons to be anxious about our own lives - potential workforce issues at the laboratory; a very slow real estate market; restaurant closings; contractor cutbacks; etc.

Yet isn't it in the most difficult times that we should draw closer together, act as a true community and share what we have with those in need? United Way is one of the vehicles through which we can do that. LANS is matching our generosity, dollar for dollar up to $1 million. But we aren't even close to that goal. In these closing days of the campaign, let's take off our blinders, think seriously about our neighbors and see what we're really made of!
