Honoring women

-A A +A
By Special to the Monitor

“New Mexico Women Making a Difference,” an exhibit of 35 black-and-white photographs by aj Melnick, opens at the Los Alamos Historical Museum on March 19 with a reception from 4-6 p.m. As is characteristic of Melnick’s work, the show is inclusive – with women from various fields and representative of the multi-cultural New Mexico population.

Almost a century after achieving the vote, women are beginning to take their proper places as partners in American society, according to Melnick. The focus of the show is to emphasize women’s leadership in fields of government, health, the arts, education and political activism.

Included are women such as Ernestine “Ernie” Duran Evans, the first woman elected as Secretary of State in New Mexico; famous Albuquerque curandera Maclovia Zamora; Native American artist Roxanne Swentzell; and the Rev. Holly Beaumont, legislative coordinator for the New Mexico Conference of Churches.
