Two hundred and eleven gift certificates are up for grabs on Dec. 1 at the 22nd annual Free Holiday Gift Certificate Drawing and Magic Candy Canes Giveaway event at CB Fox. This year, for the first time ever $5,000 worth of free certificates will be given to lucky winners.“The gift certificates are all from locally-owned Los Alamos and White Rock retail businesses,” CB Fox co-owner Dave Fox said. “Our Free Drawing and Magic Candy Canes Giveaway are designed to help both mucho shoppers and mucho local businesses during the holiday season.”The free certificates are worth between $10 and $350, Fox said, with the “Holiday Whopper Certificate” being a free La-Z-Boy reclining chair worth $600.“Hundreds of residents attend our free drawing each year,” Fox said. “And it all leads up to the Holiday Lights Parade, which passes right by our drawing site at CB Fox on Central Avenue.”The annual event is comprised of two parts that both take place Dec. 1:• First, Santa Claus gives out Magic Candy Canes to children and their parents from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. inside CB Fox. Santa chats with each child and gives him or her a candy cane from his bag. Mixed among them are 141 magical canes. Gift certificates are attached to those canes for parents, grandparents or guardians to use at participating home-owned Los Alamos and White Rock businesses. To capture those special moments with Santa, cameras are welcome.• Second, the free holiday drawing begins inside CB FOX at 5 p.m. sharp and lasts until just before the 6 p.m. Holiday Lights Parade. Santa will call out the winning names of those sharing in $3,250 worth of gift certificates.“You do have to be present to win,” Fox said. “So not only is it a fun and suspenseful experience, but when it’s over all you have to do is step out our front door and you’re ready to enjoy the Holiday Lights Parade in the heart of town.”People can stop by CB Fox, fill out a free drawing slip and drop it into the drawing box beginning today right up to 3:30 p.m. on the day of the drawing Dec. 1.Fox explained that he started the Free Holiday Drawing and Magic Candy Canes Giveaway event in 1985 as a means of giving residents good reasons to visit as many home-owned Los Alamos and White Rock retail businesses during the holidays as possible.
