The Albuquerque OutKast outlasted the Los Alamos Hilltoppers their first New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League game following the winter break.
After two scoreless periods, the OutKast picked up the lone goal of their game Sunday morning early in the third period. That proved to be the only score of the contest as the OutKast picked up a 1-0 victory at Outpost Ice Arena.
With the victory, as well as two others this weekend, Albuquerque jumped past Los Alamos in the NMIIHL standings. Albuquerque is now in a virtual dead-heat with league-leading Taos.
Los Alamos goaltender Devin Grider, statistically the top netminder in the league, had an outstanding showing in Sunday’s contest, stopping 17 shots — 10 in the final period — but his counterpart between the pipes, Sam Rosecrans, was a little better, saving all 26 of the Hilltoppers’ shots-on-goal.
Sunday’s game was the first for the Hilltoppers since Dec. 18. That game, also against the OutKast, resulted in a scoreless tie at Los Alamos County Ice Rink.
The only goal scored in the teams’ two regular season meetings came at the 9:51 mark of the third period. On a power-play chance, the OutKast’s Kyle Brown earned the goal. Brown is one of the league’s top scoring threats, tallying 12 goals in 13 games this season.
