The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team swept the Santa Fe Demons at home Saturday to remain on top of the District 2-4A standings.
Los Alamos closed out Santa Fe early in both games of the doubleheader, earning a 13-3 victory in five innings in game one and a 15-5, six-inning decision in the nightcap.
The Hilltoppers got their offense back on track after a couple of sluggish recent performances, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out that contest early and exploding for six runs in the fifth of game two.
“We came out more aggressive,” Los Alamos manager Mike Gill said. “The kids were focused Saturday, even with how cold and windy it was. That was about as focused as I’ve seen them.”
Zeke Zumbro had a huge showing at the plate, having six hits on the day, three of them for extra bases. He drove in two runs and scored three times in the opener.
Austin Aslin and Jared Mang were both 2-for-3 in the first game. Aslin had two doubles, Mang finished with a triple and both drove in three runs.
Thomas Russell went 5-for-5 in the second game, hitting a pair of doubles and driving in three runs. Jake Downs went 4-for-4 and scored three times, Connor Mang was 2-for-4 with a home run and Nick Baker finished 2-for-3 with a double.
Santa Fe, for its part, got more offense going in both of Saturday’s games than it did in the teams’ March 28 meeting, when it was shut out in five innings.
Steven Williams was the winning pitcher in game one, going five innings and giving up just one earned run while striking out five. Danny Finn, JD Weiss and Jared Mang all threw in game two, with Weiss picking up the win, throwing 2-2/3 innings in relief of Finn (2-1/3 innings pitched).
The wins keep the Hilltoppers a game ahead of the Española Valley Sundevils in anticipation of Wednesday’s game.
