The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team split its two opening games of the season last weekend.
Los Alamos fell in its home opener of the 2010-11 season Friday night to the Taos Ice Tigers, but bounced back one day later to shut out the Eldorado Eagles on the road.
Los Alamos, the defending New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League champion, was the league’s final team to get into action. It is the only team in the state to play in an outdoor rink.
At Los Alamos County Ice Rink, the Hilltoppers were defeated by the Taos Ice Tigers, the only undefeated team left in the league, by a final of 4-3.
Also last week, the Tigers topped the Albuquerque OutKast, the only other undefeated team in the state at the time, also by a count of 4-3.
The OutKast have the most total points in the NMIIL heading into this weekend’s play. The OutKast have garnered 14 points after starting off the season with a 7-1 record.
Rio Rancho (4-2-1), Los Alamos Saturday opponent, has nine points, which places them second in team standings. Taos and Cibola are tied with six points each.
Los Alamos will be at home this weekend for two more games. It will host Cleveland (1-6) at 8 p.m. Friday and Rio Rancho’s Rams at 11 a.m. Saturday.
