The final score doesn’t always reveal the essence of a contest. That was the case Tuesday as the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over district rival Santa Fe Capital High School.
Despite the narrow point advantage, Hilltopper head coach Even Gartz said it was not as close as it sounded.
“We dominated the game,” he said. “We put them back on their heels when we scored in the eighth minute.”
Although, that was the only goal, it was combined with a fierce offense and a praiseworthy defense by the ’Toppers’ two goalies.
“When you have possession of the ball, good things happen,” Gartz said.
Ryan Dunham played the first half and Oliver Funsten kept the opposing team scoreless in the second half, as the ’Toppers continued to keep district opponents from scoring.
“It’s nice to have two goal keepers to rely on,” he said.
He also comlimented Graham Delano, the Hilltopper sweeper.
“He played really well and had an outstanding game,” Gartz said. “Good things happen when you have possession of the ball.”
The ’Toppers travel to Taos Saturday, where they won earlier in the season 6-0.
A major test arrives on Tuesday, when the ’Toppers take on St. Pius in Albuquerque.
The St. Pius boys soccer team is not highly rated in the state, they’ve won 11 out of the last 13 state championships.
The Hill’Toppers now stand at 10-4, undefeated in district play, having beat all the other teams in District 2AAAA.
“We’re half way there,” Gartz said. “We’re developing nicely as a team. Gartz said he told his players they had played 30 quality minutes of the 80 minute game.
“I would love to get that up to 50 minutes”, he said.
