The weather was hot and so was the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team’s offense in its season opener Tuesday.
The Hilltoppers scored six times in a 25-minute span during the second half Tuesday to close out their opener against the Belen Eagles. Five different Hilltoppers got into the scoring column in the second half as Los Alamos crushed Belen 10-0 in 68 minutes.
The temperature hovered near 100 degrees at Belen, so Los Alamos head coach Jiri Kubicek kept shuffling personnel in and out of the game.
Those that got into the game responded very well.
“Belen doesn’t show much,” Kubicek said. “It was pretty one-sided, but it was a good way to get started.”
In the second half, Katie Hemphill scored a pair of goals, while Chandler Art, Emily Funsten, Jennifer Paul and Amy Neal all picked tallies to close out the contest early.
Neal’s second half goal, which came in the 43rd minute, was her third of the contest. Neal scored in the 10th and 15th minute, plus was credited with three assists, two of those on the other two first half goals scored.
As a sophomore in 2010, Neal was among the top five point-gatherers in Class 4A.
Jennifer Paul and Naomi Movshovich both finished with a goal and an assist in the first half.
