Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 54th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The 10 Los Alamos semifinalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program are: Adam Nekimken, Daniel Trugman, Lindsey Jacobs, Adam Izraelevitz, Adam Trujillo, Daniel Cox, Jonathan Robey, Bethany Sullivan, Lisa-Anne Hendricks and Daniel Dyer.
These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $35 million offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.
About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
More than 1.5 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools entered the 2009 National Merit Program by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as initial screening of program entrants.
