Heroes needed

It is always better to be safe than to be sorry. So to prepare for the worst, the American Red Cross in Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties are kicking off a grass roots campaign, called Heroes from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday at the Los Alamos Red Cross Office located at 2150 Juniper St.The kick off event will introduce the community to the campaign chairs, Los Alamos Fire Department Chief Douglas MacDonald and John Kitchens.The kick off event will also have the materials needed to participate in the campaign.This is the first annual Heroes campaign, said service center manager Kathy Segura. The goal of the campaign is to raise $25,000 in Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties. She explained any individual or group that donates $1,000 or more will be recognized as a hero. To encourage donors, Segura said the Red Cross will be going to local banks, grocery stores and other locations in the community to promote the campaign.However, anyone can take part in raising money, Segura said. For instance, people can set out canisters or host their own fundraisers, she said.Proceeds raised through the campaign will go towards helping the community in the event of a disaster. “(The money) goes to help us help the community,” Segura said.
