When Liz Gold and Debbie Denison turned to Self Help Inc. for financial assistance with their utility bills in 2005, the organization did more than just offer a one-time monetary payment; it provided resources so Gold and Denison could always afford to pay their bills. After researching on the Self Help website, Gold said she discovered the grants that were available. In March 2007, Gold and Dinison applied for, and received, a $1,000 Seed Money Grant. The grant money allowed them to purchase a printer, which allowed Gold, a photographer, to print her photographs and Denison to reproduce her paintings. As a result, Gold and Denison could open their gallery, Acequia Madres.“The results from it have been incredible,” Gold said. She explained, “This organization really helps people become self-supporting so they don’t need any help from organizations in the future, “ she said. “That’s really better than any hand-out.”To show their thanks, Denison and Gold donated photographs and artwork for the silent auction at the upcoming Empty Bowls Project, which is a fundraiser for Self Help.
