Dear Editor,
Starting in kindergarten, students are required to carry backpacks. By high school, the textbooks are 1,000-plus pages weighing five pounds or more each. Being forced to carry too heavy a backpack can be damaging to the back.I suggest tearing the binders of the textbooks and placing the pages in a book report cover folder. The students will then only have to carry the pages they are currently assigned. This will reduce the weight load of each subject from five pounds or more to a few ounces.Hopefully, volunteers can help with the work. Los Alamos Public Schools has an obligation to address this problem. Please consider this cost-effective solution. Also, encourage publishers to bind their textbooks by semester or quarter – not year.Diane ArcherWhite Rock
